A public holiday (also called a bank holiday or national holiday) is a day officially designated by law as a non-working day. In most EU countries, employees are entitled to paid leave on public holidays; some countries pay a premium for work performed on those days.
Not all public holidays apply everywhere within a country. In Germany, for example, Reformation Day (31 October) is a public holiday in some federal states but not others. Spain has a mix of national holidays and regional fiestas that vary by autonomous community. VClock flags each holiday as national (applies everywhere) or regional (applies in specific areas) so you can plan accurately.
Many European public holidays are tied to Easter, which falls on a different date each year. Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day (40 days after Easter), and Whit Monday (49 days after Easter) all move with it. VClock calculates these dates dynamically for every year using the Gregorian Easter algorithm, so the calendars for 2025, 2026, and beyond are always accurate.
