Bridge days 2027: when to take leave

A bridge day (Brückentag) is a working day between a public holiday and the weekend. Take it off and a single day of leave becomes a four-day weekend. Choose your state — Germany's holidays differ a lot between them.

Showing: Nationwide holidays only, 2027.

Falling on a weekend this year, so no extra day off: Labour Day (Sat 1 May), German Unity Day (Sun 3 Oct), Christmas Day (Sat 25 Dec), Second Christmas Day (Sun 26 Dec).

Assumes a Monday–Friday working week. 24 and 31 December are not public holidays, though many employers give a half day. In Bavaria, Assumption (15 August) is counted as a holiday: it is one in most, but not all, municipalities. School holidays are not included.

Public holidays in Germany — what to know

In Germany, most shops close on public holidays under strict trading-hour laws (Ladenschlussgesetz) — supermarkets, malls and non-essential retail are shut, similar to a Sunday, though bakeries and some petrol stations stay open for a few hours. Banks and public offices close nationwide. Because Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Saxony-Anhalt also observe Epiphany (6 January) and several southern states add Corpus Christi, a trip planned around 'gesetzliche Feiertage' should always check the specific Bundesland. Germans commonly take a 'Brückentag' — a single vacation day bridging a Thursday or Tuesday holiday into a four-day weekend — so expect lighter traffic on those bridge days and busier ones around Christmas and Easter.
