Austria's 13 public holidays are set at the federal level with no state-by-state variation at all — unlike Germany, every Bundesland observes exactly the same days off. Shops, banks and offices close nationwide on each holiday, with one well-known exception: 8 December (Immaculate Conception) is a public holiday, but Austrian trading law has long permitted shops to open specifically on this date because it traditionally marks the start of the Christmas shopping season. National Day (26 October) commemorates the 1955 law establishing Austria's permanent neutrality after the end of Allied occupation, and is marked by public open days at military barracks and the Hofburg in Vienna, along with flag displays on public buildings. With Epiphany, Corpus Christi, Assumption, All Saints' Day and Immaculate Conception all observed as full public holidays, Austria has one of the highest concentrations of Catholic feast days on its calendar of any European country, reflecting its historically strong Catholic identity.
