Sweden takes a lighter regulatory approach to public holidays than much of continental Europe: most supermarkets and shops stay open on 'rรถda dagar' (red days), though the state-run alcohol retailer Systembolaget closes on the holiday itself and the evening before. Midsummer's Day is the country's most significant cultural holiday โ offices and shops in cities often close early on Midsummer's Eve as people head to the countryside for maypole dancing, herring, new potatoes and strawberries, and Stockholm noticeably empties out for the week. Sweden is also unusual in having two floating holidays tied to the calendar rather than a fixed date: Midsummer's Day always falls on a Saturday between 20โ26 June, and All Saints' Day falls on a Saturday between 31 October and 6 November, so neither ever disrupts a working week. National Day (6 June) is a comparatively recent addition, only becoming an official non-working public holiday in 2005 โ before that it was marked but not a day off.
