In the Netherlands, shop-closing rules are notably more relaxed than in neighbouring Germany: supermarkets and many high-street shops open with reduced hours on most public holidays, while only Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and King's Day see widespread closures. Banks and government offices close on all 11 official holidays. King's Day (27 April) is the country's biggest public celebration — cities turn orange, and a nationwide 'vrijmarkt' (free market) lets anyone sell secondhand goods on the street without a permit. Liberation Day (5 May) is unusual: it is an official national holiday every year, but only civil servants and some sectors get it off automatically, while most private-sector employees work as normal except during 'lustrum' years — the 5-yearly anniversaries (75th, 80th, and so on) — when it becomes a full public holiday for nearly everyone. Ascension Day and Whit Monday, both floating Christian holidays tied to Easter, are widely used for long weekend getaways, especially to the coast or to Germany and Belgium.
