Public holidays in Belgium โ€” what to know

Belgium observes 10 national public holidays uniformly, but each of its three language communities also celebrates its own Community Day โ€” Flemish Community Day (11 July), the French Community's holiday (27 September) and German-speaking Community Day (15 November) โ€” which are days off only for regional government staff and schools in that community, not a nationwide holiday for private-sector workers. On the 10 national holidays, most shops, banks and offices close, though bakeries and small food shops often open for a few morning hours. National Day (21 July) commemorates the 1831 accession of Belgium's first king, Leopold I, and is marked in Brussels with a military and civilian parade along the Rue de la Loi and fireworks in the evening. As in France, Belgians commonly bridge a Tuesday or Thursday holiday into a four-day weekend by taking the adjoining day off, particularly around Ascension Day in May, one of the most popular long-weekend periods of the year.
