In Italy, national holidays close banks, government offices and most shops, though tourist-area shops and some malls now stay open under regional exemptions. The most distinctive Italian custom is around Ferragosto (15 August, Assumption Day): rather than a single day off, many businesses, factories and even entire towns close for one to two weeks around this date, as much of the country takes its main summer holiday. Beyond the 12 national holidays, most cities also celebrate their patron saint's day as a local holiday — Milan closes for Sant'Ambrogio on 7 December, Rome for Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June, Naples for San Gennaro on 19 September, and Turin and Genoa both for St. John the Baptist on 24 June. Republic Day (2 June) commemorates the 1946 referendum that abolished the monarchy and is marked by a military parade in Rome, while Liberation Day (25 April) marks the end of Nazi occupation and Fascist rule in 1945.
