Public holidays in Portugal — what to know

In Portugal, small businesses, banks and public offices close on public holidays, but large shopping centres are a notable exception — most stay open every day of the year, including Christmas Day and other holidays, unlike the stricter closing rules found in Spain or Germany. Beyond the 13 national holidays, every municipality also observes its patron saint's day; Lisbon's Saint Anthony's Day (13 June) is the best known, part of the wider 'Santos Populares' street festivals in June where neighbourhoods grill sardines and decorate streets with paper lanterns, while Porto celebrates São João on 24 June with a similarly festive atmosphere. Freedom Day (25 April) commemorates the 1974 Carnation Revolution that peacefully ended decades of dictatorship, and is marked with civic ceremonies rather than closures of daily life. Corpus Christi, a moveable Catholic feast in late May or June, remains a full public holiday in Portugal even though several other European Catholic countries have downgraded it to a regional or optional observance.
