Spain's 8 national holidays are only the baseline: each autonomous community adds up to 2 further regional holidays, and municipalities may add a local feast day, so the actual number of non-working days can reach 14 in some regions and cities. Catalonia, for instance, observes La Diada (11 September), while Andalusia marks Andalusia Day (28 February) — these do not apply nationwide. Most traditional shops, banks and offices close on public holidays, though larger cities designate 'zonas de gran afluencia turística' (high-tourist-footfall zones) where malls and tourist-area shops may stay open regardless. Spaniards also 'hacen puente' (make a bridge): when a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, it is common to take the adjoining Monday or Friday off to create a four-day weekend. National Day (12 October) commemorates Columbus's 1492 arrival in the Americas and is marked by a military parade in Madrid attended by the royal family.
